Abstract

Heterogeneous photocatalysis opens new opportunities to harvest solar energy. Extensive application however, requires the availability of photocatalytic reactors such as Photo-CREC units where macroscopic radiation balances can be accurately established. Photo-CREC reactors have been invented at the Chemical Reactor Engineering Centre (CREC) of the University of Western Ontario. The high efficiency of these units has been established using quantum and thermodynamic efficiencies. Regarding the production of hydrogen as an alternative fuel, it has been proven that Photo-CREC reactors are very well suited for water splitting using Pt on TiO2 and ethanol as an organic scavenger.
